Difference Between 4K & 8K Satellite TV Box (Satellite Receiver)
1. Basic Resolution & Pixel
- 4K Satellite Box: 3840 × 2160 pixels (~8.3 million pixels)
- 8K Satellite Box: 7680 × 4320 pixels (~33.2 million pixels, 4× pixels of 4K)
2. Video Decoding Ability (Core Hardware Difference)
✅ 4K box
- Max decode: 4K@50/60fps
- Support: H.265 (HEVC), AVS2
- CANNOT decode native 8K video streams
✅ 8K box
- Max decode: 8K@50/60fps
- Support: H.265, AVS2, AVS3, AV1 (new models)
- Backward compatible: can play all 4K, 1080p, HD satellite channels normally
Important: An 8K box works fine with 4K signals, but a 4K box cannot process real 8K feeds.
3. HDMI Output Requirement
- 4K box: Usually HDMI 2.0 (enough for 4K@60Hz HDR)
- 8K box: Requires HDMI 2.1 Because 8K@60Hz needs 48Gbps bandwidth; HDMI 2.0 cannot carry full 8K signal. You also need an Ultra High Speed HDMI cable.
4. Satellite Signal & Bandwidth Fact (Very critical!)
Live satellite 8K broadcast needs much higher transport bitrate than 4K.
- Most global satellite platforms only offer 4K channels, very few operational 8K satellite live channels currently.
- Even if you buy an 8K receiver, you will mostly watch 4K/HD satellite TV for now.
5. TV Display Matching
- If you own only a 4K TV: An 8K box will downscale 8K content to 4K screen; you see no extra sharpness benefit from satellite TV.
- If you own a genuine 8K television ≥75/85 inch: Only an 8K box can unlock full resolution when 8K satellite feeds are available.
6. Chipset & Price
- 8K satellite receivers use stronger, newer SoC chips → higher cost.
- 4K satellite boxes are cheaper and sufficient for most users.
7. Simple Summary Table

Buying Advice
- Most users → Choose 4K satellite box: Enough for nearly all existing satellite TV services.
- Only pick an 8K satellite box if:
- You have a real 8K large-size TV
- You have access to satellites transmitting native 8K live signals
- You also plan to play local 8K video files via USB/hard drive on the box
explain whether your target satellite (e.g. Astra, Hotbird, Galaxy, China DVB-S2X) currently has 8K channels.
Real situation of 8K satellite channels (Astra / Hotbird / global DVB-S2X)
1. Critical truth first (2026)
There are almost NO permanent, regular live native 8K satellite TV channels for home viewers.
All known 8K satellite feeds are:
- Short-time test signals / demo streams
- Temporary broadcast for exhibitions
- Not official 24/7 television channels
Bandwidth fact
- 1 normal 4K satellite channel: ~25–45 Mbps (HEVC)
- 1 native 8K@50fps HDR stream: 70–90 Mbps Satellite operators are unwilling to waste one full expensive transponder for an 8K demo channel with tiny audience.
2. Popular European satellites status
Hotbird 13°E
- Had occasional 8K test transponders in past years
- No active FTA / subscription 8K channels running daily now
- Plenty of stable 4K UHD channels available
Astra 19.2°E / Astra 28.2°E
- SES ran multiple 8K transmission demos years ago
- No permanent consumer 8K service launched
- All mainstream UHD services remain 4K
Other satellites (Turksat, Eutelsat 7W, Galaxy series)
Only sporadic short 8K test broadcasts; no continuous 8K TV channels.
3. Important trick many sellers hide
Many "8K satellite boxes" online:
✅ Can play local 8K video files from USB/hard drive
❌ CANNOT receive native 8K satellite live TV (because no such permanent signal exists)
“8K-ready” ≠ “there are 8K satellite channels you can watch”
4. 4K Box vs 8K Box — practical buying conclusion
-
If you mainly watch satellite TV channels: 👉 4K DVB-S2X satellite box is fully enough. All current satellite UHD broadcasts are 4K HEVC. An 8K box gives zero extra picture improvement here.
-
Only choose an 8K satellite box if both below apply:
- You plan to play downloaded 8K MKV video files via USB storage on the box
- You own a genuine 8K television + HDMI 2.1 cable
5. Extra hardware check you must confirm
- 4K receiver: needs HDMI 2.0 for 4K@60Hz HDR
- True 8K-capable receiver: must have HDMI 2.1 If an 8K satellite box only has HDMI 2.0, it cannot output full 8K@60fps — it’s just marketing name.
